So you want to know how I get the prints on the pots
"PLEASE HELP. What screens do you use? What's the ink? How do you get the print onto the clay without it smudging everywhere?"
If you follow along on Instagram you've probably watched me peel a sheet of newsprint off a slab and thought, right, but HOW. You're not on your own. My messages are full of it.
Maybe you've had a go already and ended up with a screen full of dried underglaze and a slab that cracked before you could transfer a thing. Maybe you've watched every free video going and still can't work out why yours won't stick. I've been there. I made every mistake in the book so you don't have to.
Printing on clay turned into a bit of an obsession
I trained as a ceramicist, taught art for years, then came back to clay full time. Somewhere along the way I got completely hooked on putting images onto pots, and I've not really stopped since.
It's the thing I get asked about most, and it's the thing I most love doing. So this course is me handing over the whole method. The bits that took me years to figure out, and a fair few kiln disasters to get right.
HELLO
Hi, I'm Donna!
I'm the potter behind oto ni pottery, working out of a wee garden studio in Bangor, Northern Ireland. My work is all screen printed ceramics. Graphic, patterned, a bit bold, usually black and white with the odd pop of colour.
You might know me from Instagram, or from winning The Great Pottery Throw Down back in 2024. These days I split my time between making work for exhibitions and shops, and teaching people how to do this for themselves.
Printing on clay is genuinely my favourite thing to talk about. I'm absolutely delighted to finally put the whole lot in one place for you.

What you'll unlock through the course
Make your own screens
Framed silkscreens, EZ screens, heat transfer vinyl. You'll make them, expose them properly, and know how to look after them.
Mix inks and slips that work
Turn an underglaze into a printable ink, get your consistency spot on, and mix slips that actually transfer instead of tearing.
Pull a clean slip transfer
Print onto a slab and get a crisp transfer every time, knowing the exact moment the clay is ready.
Build printed forms
Take your printed slabs and hand build them into mugs, serving dishes and more complex vessels.
Fire and finish it
Bisque, glaze and fire your pieces so the print survives the kiln and comes out looking the way you want.
Fix it when it goes wrong
Spot the usual disasters before they happen. Bleeding, warping, dodgy slip, cloudy glaze, the lot.
A proper start-to-finish course
The course includes 9 modules, 60+ videos lessons and over 5 hours of content that take you from a lump of clay and a blank screen all the way to a finished, fired, printed piece.
Follow it in order, or dip into the bit you're stuck on. You can pause and replay everything at any time, so you can learn at your own pace, without pressure.
It's yours to keep, so you can come back to it whenever.
In my course you will learn
Introduction
Who I am, a wander through my work, and how the course is laid out so you know exactly where you're headed.
Working with clay
The groundwork. Health and safety, clay terminology, the tools I use for hand building, and how to roll, dry and join clay so nothing warps or cracks on you.
Making screens
Everything screens. The types I use, drawing fluid and screen filler, heat transfer vinyl, making transparencies, working out your exposure time, then exposing and washing out a framed silkscreen.
Inks and slips
What an underglaze actually is, how to turn it into a printable ink, getting your consistency right, and mixing and colouring slips for transfer.
Making a serving dish with the slip transfer technique
Your first proper piece. Printing onto newsprint, coating with slip, knowing the exact moment it's ready, peeling it back, and forming it over a hump mould.
Printing on hand built pieces
Getting prints onto a hand built mug. Making tissue transfers, cutting them up, applying them, and drying to keep warping to a minimum.
Building complex forms with print
The really good stuff. Working with flax paper porcelain, printing onto large A3 slabs, using a viewfinder to compose, and hand building a full vessel from your printed clay.
Alchemy of the kiln
Bisque firing, what you need for glazing, and how to glaze your pieces so the print comes through the way you want it to.
Troubleshooting and FAQs
All the common disasters and how to fix them. Bleeding underglazes, screens that won't expose, warping, dodgy slip consistency, cloudy glaze, and what to do with your leftovers.
